UBC Walter C. Koerner Forestry Centre
Located within the 5,000 hectare Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, the lodge is an addition to the Loon Lake Camp providing an area for forestry and environmental education for the UBC Faculty of Forestry and many other educational groups. Each room includes a private bathroom, and offers stunning forest, lake, and mountain views from large picture windows. The natural stone-clad fireplace and hearth inside the two-storey great room engender social interaction, while four large soaring cedar columns that support the roof beams add a sense of drama to the space. Construction for this project is a combination of wood frame and heavy timber, befitting its forestry-related setting. In the true spirit of Green Building practices, the majority of the wood products were grown and harvested right in the research forest and sawn by UBC’s own lumber mill near the site.
