Margaret Ma Murray Community School

This 4,500 m2 K-6 school was built on a green field site in Fort St. John in response to significant enrolment pressures. The property is part of a larger site to be shared with a future middle school, and KMBR did the master planning for both the elementary and middle schools. Prior to delivering the full design, KMBR worked with the client to develop a Project Definition Report (PDR) that detailed the funding request, two development options, a recommended procurement process, a risk management plan, financial plan, and project schedule.

KMBR led the programming for the new school by facilitating a visioning process over a three-day period. The resulting educational plan called for the school to be organized into five small learning communities with a central “learning lab” and gathering area. The new school is designed to be adaptable to changing requirements over time. Walls open up with garage doors to allow easy movement between learning studios and enable spaces to open or close to one another. The facility also includes a daycare for 37 children.
