Nechako Valley Secondary School Renovation
KMBR was asked to take seven traditionally organized classrooms at Nechako Valley Secondary School and repurpose them as a 21st century learning environment in order to create a distinct community of grade 7 and 8 students within the existing school. The proposed plan opens the exterior walls with new windows to bring in a greater amount of light and spaces are reorganized into various sizes to include classrooms with operable partitions between rooms and corridors, breakout rooms, a teacher collaboration room, open collaboration spaces, and several “knowledge nooks”. This reorganization and redistribution of space allows educators to work with students in a variety of scenarios: one-on-one, in small groups, as combined classes (co-teaching), or in the traditional classroom style. The aim of the design is to create a bright, vibrant and spacious 21st century learning environment where younger students feel safe, comfortable, and thrive in their transition years between elementary and secondary school.

I feel truly blessed to work in this great space. From an administrators perspective, it makes learning very transparent. It is a space that requires staff and students to work as a community of learners.”
