Thompson Centre - Yukon Long Term Care
& Rehabilitation Centre
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Facing the Yukon River and connected to the Whitehorse Hospital is the Thompson Centre. Designed in association with Poon Gardner Billington Architects, the facility has three main components: a mentally impaired residents’ wing, a long term care residents’ wing and a rehabilitation wing.

The plan is organized around a two-storey high “main street,” with resident rooms are clustered in pods, each with their own dining, multi-purpose and lounge space. The exterior finishes include cedar wall and roof shingles and rough stone masonry. This indigenous character is carried inside the facility with warm colours, a large central stone fireplace, and a glue-laminated post and beam framework extending down the main street.
