Summerland RCMP
Summerland, British Columbia
Best described as simple, functional, and elegant, the design for this new 10,000sf RCMP detachment located in the small rural community of Summerland in the central Okanagan has received accolades from staff at RCMP Asset Management Unit, who have indicated this is one of the best layouts they have seen.
Safety, security, functionality and a healthy working environment topped the list of priorities that drove the design. Workspaces as well as the interior of the building are flooded with natural light from large expanses of glass and overhead clerestory windows, thus enhancing occupant comfort. Even though LEED® certification was not a priority for the client, the building is designed to best practices incorporating sustainable building design measures equivalent to a LEED® Gold standard.
The quiet elegance of the exterior design appropriately communicates its function as an important civic building. Long, low sweeping roof lines combined with the use of rammed earth walls pick up on the colours contours of the surrounding desert landscape. This project is a collaboration between KMBR and Allen Maurer Architects.
