The new RCS high school campus is a continuation of KMBR’s working relationship with the Richmond Christian School Society that began with an expansion of the existing campus located immediately to the north of the new site. Designed in a collaborative effort between KMBR (lead firm) and Allen Maurer Architects, the new school provides teaching spaces for up to 300 students. At the focal point of this complex lies a multi-purpose gymnasium / assembly hall. A full-height translucent north-facing wall will provide ample amounts of natural light for day-time activities, while at night it will cast a glow light outward and give a lantern-like effect.
The project included a re-zoning process to change the use from agricultural to public assembly (ASY) use. The east half of the site lies within the agricultural land reserve which requires special buffer zones to the developed part of the site.
The building employs elements of sustainable design including access to daylight and views, natural materials, and energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems.
