Port Moody Public Safety Building
Port Moody, British Columbia

After a planning study completed in 2001 KMBR was commissioned in 2004 to design a new public safety building for the City of Port Moody. The building is designed to accommodate three public safety agencies. The Port Moody Police Department is the main tenant with a staff of 80. BC Ambulance Services occupy a four-bay ambulance station on the ground level, while the Canadian Pacific Railway Police occupy the south half of the third floor.

The building program is organized around a central three-storey sky-lit atrium which fosters a sense of community and provides natural daylight to the occupied spaces close to the core. Designed as a post-disaster facility, the Port Moody Public Safety Building will also serve the City in the event of a natural disaster with a 1,000 sf. emergency operations centre located on the third floor.

In response to Port Moody’s commitment towards sustainability, the building design incorporates a number of green principles including energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems, day lighting strategies, controllability of systems, indoor air quality, and green building materials. 40 wells serve a ground-source fed heating and cooling system, which greatly reduces carbon emissions (green house gases) over the lifespan of the building.
