Moricetown Community Centre
Moricetown, British Columbia
The Moricetown Band and Kyah Wiget Education Society commissioned KMBR to design the Moricetown Community School, Community Centre and Band Offices. The complex allows the interaction of all members of the community and sharing of spaces such as the hall/gymnasium, meeting rooms, library/resource centre, and service areas.
The Moricetown complex is organized around a central “Feast Hall” which functions as a Band Council Meeting Room, a multi-purpose gathering and ceremonial space. A glazed end wall provides a view to a large outdoor ceremonial circle, including five totem poles representing each of the five “clans” in the community. The school expansion includes classrooms, a new administration area, library, computer room, and gymnasium, all shared by the community centre. The office wing houses the Band management, hereditary chiefs and treaty offices, finance, operations and maintenance, education, forestry, mapping, engineering and social services.
