- Winner in Western Red Cedar Non-Residential
A Design-Build project, located within the 5000 hectare Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, the new lodge building is the latest addition to the Loon Lake Camp, which provides an area for forestry and environmental education for the UBC Faculty of Forestry as well as many other educational groups.
The new lodge provides adult-oriented accommodations for up to 40 guests, with full dining and banquet hall facilities. Each room includes a private bathroom, and offers stunning forest, lake, and mountain views from large picture windows.
The natural stone-clad fireplace and hearth inside the two-storey great room engender social interaction, while four large soaring cedar columns that support the roof beams add a sense of drama to the space.
The chosen method of construction for this project is a combination of wood frame and heavy timber, befitting its forestry-related setting. In the true spirit of Green Building practices, the majority of the wood products were grown and harvested right in the research forest and sawn by UBC’s own lumber mill near the site.
