Kwayhquitlam Middle School
Coquitlam (SD #43), British Columbia
Kwayhquitlam Middle School is built on an existing 3.9 ha. level site. It is surrounded by existing housing that required a building height and configuration that would preserve, as much as possible, the open area enjoyed by the existing neighbourhood. The original school continued to function until the new one was occupied, then the old building was demolished and replaced with play fields.
The classroom design allows for interactive groupings and activities with easy access to a central library, technical, fine art and physical education facilities.
The high volume central library forms the focal point, and adjoins two radiating wings of classroom pods. A third wing contains fine Arts, technical and physical education facilities. All of the above enclose a multi-use uncovered courtyard.
The building was zoned to provide community access to the multi-purpose and gymnasium facilities for after hours use, while retaining the security of the remainder of the school. Electrically-operable walls allow the multi-purpose room to open to the adjoining drama and lobby areas, creating a large multi-use area for both school and community use. The drama room is raised up to form a stage.
In 2000 KMBR designed a two classroom plus special education infill addition, constructed within the enclosed courtyard. The addition complements the original design, despite being budgeted for a much lower unit rate. |
