In January 2006, KMBR was engaged to design a 160 bed expansion to Kinsmen Place Lodge and renovations/additions to the existing 144 bed facility to meet current standards.

The 0.84 hectare site, located in Surrey Centre, has a significant slope and limited access from Old Yale Road. The existing six-storey facility occupies the east half of the site and is comprised mostly of double rooms, which are to be converted into assisted living units.

The new building, also six storeys, will have underground parking for the entire site and basement level links to the existing building's ground floor. The ground floor in the new building will be comprised of a common reception area for both buildings, common amenity space, adult day services, access to secure outdoor patio, dietary and laundry for both buildings, and other service space.

Each of the upper five floors will consist of two 16 bed neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood has its own elevator access, dining, lounge, activity, bathing and outdoor space. A care centre and other service spaces (including a service elevator) are shared by both neighbourhoods. The layout allows for common areas to be opened up between neighbourhoods for larger gatherings.
