The 1200 student 11,770m² Heritage Woods Secondary School is a LEED® Silver Certified project with a high standard of sustainable design. The first LEED® certified school in BC, it has numerous passive and active resource-conserving features, a reduced environmental impact, and a strong emphasis on day-lighting, occupant health and comfort. The 325 seat theatre doubles as a community resource for special events.

Additional green design features include a compact and thermally efficient building plan & envelope, a building orientation and layout that optimizes daylight and minimizes solar heat gain, effective daylight control (shading devices plus light shelves), durable, low-maintenance, and self-finish materials, ground-source heat pump cooling and heating, heat recovery ventilation utilizing chimney effect in atrium; natural ventilation, opening windows; high efficiency boilers for half the boiler capacity peak load, variable speed drives for mechanical pumps, low water consumption plumbing fixtures, partial use of waterless urinals, DDC controls and enhanced building commissioning procedures; zero use of CFC-based refrigerants and Halon fire suppression, carbon dioxide monitoring, high air exchange rating, occupancy sensors to control lighting and outside air, reduced artificial lighting, enhanced daylighting, energy efficient lamps, ballasts, exit signs, exterior lighting on photocell and time-clock control. Finally, a computer display in the atrium indicates the dynamic workings of the building to occupants and serves as a educational tool.
