Chilliwack Law Courts
Chilliwack, British Columbia

The redesign of the Chilliwack Law Courts was also a part of the Design-Build project awarded to KMBR and The Van Maren Group. This project represents an important downtown revitalization for the City of Chilliwack. It includes a new 35,000 square foot courthouse, a 20,000 square foot office building, a civic plaza and a landmark clock tower. All components were required to meet the design guidelines for the City’s historic downtown core.

The courthouse contains five courtrooms, Provincial and Supreme; the judiciary, law library, crown counsel day-offices, all related administrative functions, holding-cell block, secure bays and judges’ parking.

A highly efficient floor plan is accommodated within a two-storey, tilt-up concrete shell which is carefully detailed to enhance the character of the downtown core. Inside, the modern, efficient and worker-friendly environment quietly accommodates the workings of justice. Ample amounts of daylight enter the building by way of skylights and extensive glazing located in the public areas, workspaces and judicial circulation. Non-institutional colour schemes further a relaxed, non-threatening environment for the building's users.
