Chilliwack Five Corners Plaza
Chilliwack, British Columbia
In the Fall of 1999, the team of KMBR and The Van Maren Group won the Design-Build competition for the Five Corners Project. Van Maren arranged financing for this project on a P3 basis.
The three-storey office building accommodates offices related to the adjacent courthouse, including Crown Counsel, Probation Services and Family Justice, as well as the city-operated C.E.P.C.O. offices. The main floor includes a restaurant and Probation Services that will convert to retail space.
A significant portion of the site was “given back to the public” in the form of a civic square, where the combination of soft and hard landscaping provide opportunities for gathering, lounging, social interaction, or simply for eating lunch on a sunny day. Special importance was given to sun orientation and to maximizing southern exposure. Deciduous trees offer summer shade.
A ground-floor cafe featuring sidewalk seating and a large in-ground chessboard provides opportunities for food and relaxation.
The plaza extends from the courthouse entrance to the “Five Corners” intersection where a landmark 75’ high Millennium Clock Tower provides a meeting place and a visual focal point. |
