BC Nurses' Union Office Building
Burnaby, British Columbia

Located at 4060 Regent Street in Burnaby, this building serves as the head office for the British Columbia Nurses’ Union. The site slopes gently to the north, allowing short grade access to the underground parkade and to the main entry to the west.

The client’s well-organized Building and Space Committees outlined goals aimed at providing optimum working conditions. Natural light topped all wish lists.
The design is based on a compact, two-storey concept that creates a strong identity for the working community. The large central skylit atrium is the heart of the building and serves as an exhibit space and expansion for the Council Room. Skylights face north, bringing in diffused light and minimizing glare and heat gain. All offices and clerical areas have natural light.

All offices are the same size to allow for flexibility and future rearrangements, and all have operable windows. The 12 offices opening to the atrium have a sliding door and balcony.

Providing for a staff of 80, the design also includes several jointly used facilities including a council/classroom, a staff room with a patio, an exercise room and meeting rooms, all grouped around the atrium. A secure roof garden adds relaxation space on the limited site. A reflecting pool at the front of the building also serves as security.
